When I did this painting a good friend of me wanted something to do with robots, and that was more or less it. I had been doing a lot of late night street walking (not that sort of street walking). I kept looking at the Street Lights and thinking about what a wonderfully dynamic image they are, colorful but mechanical, two of my favorite things. I began to formulate an idea about a post apocalyptic make shift robot made from growing human babies and I slammed the two together and got this. I was listening to a lot of Radiohead at the time and I feel the face reflects that. Enjoy

Timing

Timing is everything, we all know this. Unfortunately over the last 100 years and even more so in the last 20 years 4/4 timing seems to be the only meter you can find. Of course! What better way to keep the rhythm then the timing that people can learn by 3 years of age? It's almost like an international chant. The steady THUD… THUD… THUD… THUD... and repeat, 1... 2... 3... 4... and repeat. It's easy to understand why it feels so right. 4 corners to a standard room or wall, it reminds us of the rhythm of our own heart, you don't get disoriented by that pesky 5. It’s the timing that we whisper to ourselves while we’re waiting to make a run for it, the 4 being replaced by “GO!”. We hear it in our cities when a large truck is backing up, when someone is hammering away at their latest project in the yard, or we’re crossing the street with the green man flashing in sync with the ambient beep across the way. You may say, “you could count that out to a 3 or a 7!” But let's be honest, going through the day to day of these events are you really carrying it out to 7 before you repeat back at 1? I didn't think so.

Strange that the genres of music that most entail this sort of redundant Housewife thump are Folksy/Country Esq. music and “Electroknorap” That's right... I threw all those genres together! Nowadays some of the most technology dependent music relies on the same redundant foot tapping beats that minimalist folk artists do. I can almost hear some of you now “common dude, don't be so elitist!”, “It's just music man, who cares if it's easy, as long as it feels good.” Of course these are legitimate statements with value and a point. At what point does the near absence of variety become a good thing? When you can hear a new song and immediately tell when the hook will show up is a depression that I've rarely felt with any other art form.

For a little bit of background on why I'm going on this seemingly pointless crusade I'll set it up where this thought began to nag at me. I was at my local coffee house in my quaint little Mormon mountain town. I was a single 20 something young man watching a gaggle of teen girls with backachne surround a 20 something young man with Fabio hair in the corner as he clumsily strummed his guitar and crooned like a basset hound about how “reality TV and Politics control his life”. He was attempting to replicate the singing fashion of those heartland poets Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson. And even though I'm well aware that my 20 something young man jealousy of him keeping the attention of all the girls in the joint is not lost on me, I can honestly say he was failing miserable at replicating the proper notes and emotion that those great musicians could pull off on a bad day. It was embarrassing to watch him squirm strenuously, trying embody the image of the wandering poet. “No care in the world, just walking the road and strumming the guitar to the beat of his own footsteps.” It was also infuriating to watch the gaggle of whimper junkies not pick up on any of this. They were almost enraptured by his ineptitude with the guitar. This scene was smacking me in the face as I stirred my coffee slowly in the corner window seat, waiting for my chess buddy to arrive. Each song (or if he could call a bunch of meandering riffs a song) involved him stating that Society would not hold his spirit down. All this pouring out of his mouth as multiple brands and logos plastered across his chest and equipment seared right through the fawning fan club into my wide confused eyes. Now don't get me wrong, in this day and age of free downloads and shitty record companies I can't blame a musician trying to work the capitalist system a little and advertise him or herself. But when you're talking about Society as one large evil, and that we should all return to the days of the pioneers and the settlers in order to save our souls I can't help but have a question for the musician who thinks this way, “what's the weather like up your own ass?”

For the most part we attained that ability to have consistency and an ever present 1... 2... 3... 4... in our day to day lives. Unfortunately I also believe that humanity through our collective mental evolution over the last few decades has let go of an important aspect of music, life, and rhythm. The aspect of randomization, a kick, a hook, a tempo change, a mood shift, a good ol‘ fashioned melodic kick in the head. I mean really! How often have we walked down the street and the car alarm that goes off down the road switches from down beats to upbeats on a ¾ timing sequence? Never! How many times when we’re getting ready to sprint to the finish do we start counting and cycle back to 7? When have you looked out your car window and seen someone walking outside the rhythm of the community? Sliding across the concrete with an extended lift to their left foot step while the headphone cord dances wildly at their chest, caught in a tornado of music? 4/4 is not bad, don't get me wrong, it's just easy. Our consistent embracing of this easy path is ignoring how random and difficult our lives can be, and isn't music, or art for that matter, supposed to be an expression of humanity at it's best as well as it's easiest? It's a matter of taste, placement, and context. When it's you and your lover, staring into each others eyes across the fire, 4/4 makes sense and feels right. But if the song is supposed to be about drive, skill, the evils of society, or sheer craziness. for god sakes leave the god damn techno beats at home with the cozier moods. Variety is the spice of life, Variety IS life.

Taiwan Part 1

CHAPTER 1: First Flight

My eyes creaked open to a shaded economy class seating section. I looked around with the jarring confused mixture of no sleep and knowing I was going somewhere I've never been before. Not some new friends house or a new job, this was somewhere truly different, somewhere at least within my own mind, magical. Children were sitting in front of me, three of them lined up like stooges. They were all hitting each other back and forth in some sort of ritualistic joke between what seemed to be brothers. They were careless, they didn't seem to notice that they had flown over Las Vegas, one of the mystical cities of American lore, or the fact that they were thousands of feet in the air. There was no danger for them it seemed, they were not bound to the pragmatic thoughts and ideas that I was in that moment, they were free. Even though being 23 at the time I felt as if I needed some sort of mothering from the unknown. Some gentle soothing female voice surrounding me, telling me it would all work out. little did I know that China Airlines offers that very thing, perhaps they don't precisely say that “everything will work out”, but the voice sure sounds like it's trying to say something to that effect. I was heading outside of the country for the very first time, I felt like it was the first day of school all over again, looking around at all the people, wondering what they're thinking about, wondering what their hopes and dreams are. I hadn't left the State of Utah for 5 years except for a weekend excursion into Denver. That trip to Denver had been the most exhausting and rewarding weekend I had had in my adult life, that was about it as far as travel went. Not much I know, but when you're living in Logan, Utah you don't have much in the way of excitement or exhaustion, simply trying to not let the stillness drive you crazy. It's always far to easy to deal with everything, everyone knows everybody in a place like Logan. I was mostly excited for that very reason, I was going towards an island that most of my fellow Utah citizens cannot properly place other then for the products they wear that have a tag with TAIWAN typed across the bottom. I was heading towards a place where I knew no one, it was liberating. Despite this my stomach churned with unease. My mouth was dry from not sleeping the night before. I didn't feel a need to eat or drink much of anything, I had an ipod in my backpack with all my favorite songs but I didn't feel a need to listen to them. I had books I had intended to read that I was leaving alone, only grasping the arm rests earnestly... waiting... wondering.

CHAPTER 2: LAX

“Welcome to Los Angeles, We will be landing in approximately 20 minutes, please have your seats moved to the upright position, and trays folded up right. Turn off all electronic devices such as cell phones, computers, and personal entertainment equipment and prepare for landing.” This was the first thing I heard as I awoke once more from a shallow sleep. Another first, I was arriving in L.A. How exciting! How terrifying. I was confident but sure of nothing, my stomach was beginning to settle and I started to feel a semblance of purpose. Finally something to do other then 30 minutes of sleep in short bursts. We started our approach and as always I was grasping my arm rest, picturing in my head the cabin splitting open, as if the people who engineered the plane had somehow forgotten one screw in the making of the plane. ku ku ku ku ku ku ku ku ku keeeeeeer ku ku keeeer ku keeeeeeeeeeeeeee rings through my ears as the plane hits the the pavement. I loosen my grip slightly and start running through the itinerary in my head “passport... money... computer.... Have I knocked my computer around to much?.. I sure hope I remembered mouth wash, God I hope the bus thing works out when I get there”. My tooth began to ache. I had avoided spending any money on getting my first wisdom tooth removed not only because America's health care system is a complete failure of morality, but also because I refused to put to much money towards anything other then my trip to Taiwan, I was skating on low funds. My trip was not for the purpose of school, career, or language practice alone so don't think it was a dumb decision immediately. It was more then anything a spiritual healing for my mind, and perhaps my body considering how much water I'd have to drink. I'm not a religious man but I do believe in something beyond our knowledge. Whether that be the mathematics of the universe or the invisible hand of a creator I'm not sure. I'm sure as hell over the notion of a white bearded father figure who only has ten rules and those rules apparently justify omnipresent parental abuse. So back to the tooth, the thing I had avoided in order to go on a “spiritual journey”. I popped two ibuprofen pills and closed my eyes, thinking of how low I was getting on my supply of pain killers. Just how the hell I was going to get Taiwanese pain killers “were they the same? Of course they are, every human being has pain, but how do they deal with pain? Is it the same psychology? Is it measurable? And if so can it be generalized to a culture or is it only and always the individual who defines the level of pain?” I like to think that the person who defines pain is the individual. Call it justifying a coping mechanism but it's the only way I can get the throbbing to slow with out spending much needed money. Perhaps it's all I need. We docked and I entered the make shift hallway with all the attendents exhaustedly saying thank you for flying, (there's no way their thaaat thankful.) I wandered cautiously into LAX and was already astounded by the sheer size of the airport. I began thinking about all the celebrities that were only a mile this way or that and had a slight giddy school girl moment, it subsided quite quickly when I looked out the window at the air outside. I was in Los Angeles for the first time, and of course the first thing I noticed was the smog, it was a warm day and no rain but It seemed as if it would rain any minute because of a thick gray haze hanging over the city. I turned to someone and asked if they were expecting any rough weather in L.A. and they gave me a puzzled look as if I had stated a riddle they barely remember from years before. I began trudging towards the the baggage check in and everything else and slashed my debit card through the electronic check in. “ticket not found” read across the screen, I began to panic. “oh god! I don't want to be stuck in L.A. I'd rather be stuck in Taipei where hardly anyone speaks English then be stuck in L.A.!” What can I say, I like my wallet, teeth, and dignity. I soon realized that of course there was no ticket to be found, I would be taking a different plane service, I checked my papers again and there it was, China Airlines. Even the name sent chills down my spine, thinking about where I would be in a mere 14 hours. I started heading towards their baggage claim instead. My ass hurt, It was already starting to chafe from the heat. “damn, how's it going to be once I get to across the pacific”. I strolled slowly, each swing of the leg slightly stinging. I was glad I only had a few bags so I didn't have to worry about large strides. I exited the Delta check in and took two hard rights towards the international flights. I went inside and already felt as if I was entering a completely different world. This was the first time I actually had been in a place where I was the only white person I could see, it was fantastic. I expected to be disarmed by this or somehow stressed out like some of my friends told me I would be. but all I felt was a sense of peace, knowing that I wasn't going to swing into jethro spit Mcmullet at any minute. It was the first time my Stomach had started to settle.

The Motivator

The main figure which is the statue is designed after ‘Fu Lions’, a homonym based on the Chinese word ‘Fu’ meaning luck or prosperity. the one arm jutting out from it's side is the first step on the stairs towards personal fulfillment or self actualization, kind of based after Maslow's hierarchy of needs. This first step is also holding a rubics cube which I used to symbolize knowledge, and the mystery of the world around us. On one side of the stairs I put buildings with only the top floor having the lights on, symbolizing a desire to reach the top in your professional career. On the other side I used flowers to portray a need for balance between professionalism and things like love "red", Food "green", and knowledge "blue". I had a lot of fun on this painting, let me know what you think!

When a friend of mine decided she'd like me to do a painting with Sunflowers I assumed it was going to be a fairly standard foray into the Flower painting realm. As I began on this painting I was listening to a lot of reports about the current social climate (Economy, President Obama's Ahfganistan policy, and Global Warming, religion, etc...) and one mood that i picked up on throughout all the interviews, speeches, and opinion pieces was a general sense of "who knows?" or "what the hell do we do about all this?".

If there's been one mood that has permiatted this decade and my generation, it's been a sense of confusion or being lost in the dark amongst all the weighty issues that stare us in the face on the television or internet everyday. That's what brings me to this painting. Each component of this painting is representative of our current social climate and the players involved. I'll begin with the Sunflowers, they are of course the main part of the painting and are representative of you and I, the common american citizen. They are especially meant to represent the members of my generation, the generation that has been raised and influenced by the Babyboomers and Reaganomics.

The Bright glowing light that is above the entire Sunflower field overseeing them is representative of our Government, the to dots of light next to that light represent the two major parties that have been in control of the political system for as long as any of us can remember. To the left the building with all the lights on is the Legislative branch of the government, for those of you that can't remember what that is, it is the House of Representatives and the Senate. And on the right, the building with only one light on is representative of the Judicial branch/supreme court. All these branches of the government have been the field overseer for generations and generations. And I'd have to say that more so then at any other time in American history that all three seem to hold themselves above the American people as opposed to truly representing them. Ever since the 50's especially passing laws and legislation that has truly undermined the American People's genuine need for life, love, and the pursuit of happiness. What I like to consider the man behind the curtain or at least the 4th branch of our government is the Media. This is represented as the red light towers behind the buildings and bright lights. The reason I chose those lights to represent the media is their view stretches further then the government's, permeating all our lives and information. But at the same time it's influence is a haze and harder to define then that of the government.

Last but certainly not least is the brownish dark sky with the Moon in the background. I chose the moon to be a main focus because I consider landing on the moon to be one of our Nations greatest accomplishments and stretches towards progress. Now in the 21st century we seem to have lost a sense of progress or purpose, the Moon now sitting ghoulishly in the sky, a reminder of where we were headed and where we havn't been since.

To touch on the Sunflowers one last time, as a viewer you'll notice that each one has a different stance, one feels the weight of the world heavy on it's head, another is looking around optimistically at all the opportunities that are surrounding it, a pair of sunflowers are huddling together, keeping each other safe and warm in uncertain times. Although our stances may be different we are all the same in one way or another. And as we move into this next decade hopefully there is a dawn on the horizon and we can continue to progress and move the human species forward into the future with hope and optimism.

This painting was inspired by one of my favorite Authors of all time. Hunter S. Thompson. I wanted to do a painting that encapsulated the care free spirit of this sage like journalist/author. So many artistic interpretations of him have come out acid-washed or druggy and I wanted to do something a little more soothing while still honoring his "Gonzo" nature. One thing that the man had in bulk was his elequance with words, from the controlled insanity of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" to the shockingly balanced journalistic work "Hells Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga". He could be rip roaring drunk and half loosing his mind on LSD and still put together an essay that would make any english major weep in envy. Through out the painting there are words springing forth from the beach around him, not only english but Chinese to symbolize Hunter's ability to find all sorts of philisophical musings or stories in his surroundings no matter there alien quality (even if he himself was oblivious to their meaning). And of course there sits a drink in a nice tall bottle sitting neatly next to an ash tray holding who knows what kind of substances. The beach was inspired by one of his most respected novels "The Rum Diary : A Novel" and I personally can't wait to see this tale come to life with Johnny Depp once again paying homage to the great American author. He has inspired countless numbers of creative individuals (such as Johnny Depp and the writers at the adult swim cartoon Venture bros.) simply by being himself and I hope to one day read the words of the next Great American Gonzo Journalist. I give you lovingly, "Hunter"

MOON REVIEW

When I got around to this particular movie I threw it on just to have some background noise as I slipped into my daily nap session. I soon noticed that I was being jerked out of nap mode by a truly spectacular Psychological Sci Fi film. The cinematography is stunningly bleak and beautiful and each shot is brought to life perfectly by Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey (Kevin being the voice of the monotone care giving robot). Before I give you little tid bits about this movie it's worth explaining that I'm a huge Sci-fi fan. And no, Star Wars and Star Trek are not Sci-fi, they are fantasy. I'm talking "Blade Runner", "Alien", "Contact", and "Children of Men" sci-fi, the kind of movie that takes an actual scientific theory or hunch and turns it into a lively emotional story. A movie that bursts with enjoyment in tackling all sorts of moral and social issues, whether that was the main goal in the beginning of filming or not. "Moon" even though it is a slow movie, moves at an appropriate pace, I never wanted or felt the movie needed to be fast paced and action packed. I found myself reveling in each subtle nuance that first time director Duncan Jones was bringing to the screen. Each camera angle perfectly setting up the loneliness and isolation that our main protaganist Sam (Sam Rockwell) is feeling. As the film starts Sam is reaching the end of his 3 year stint on the moon, and is simply going through the daily motions until he can get home and see his wife and (now) 3 year old daughter. The reason Sam is on the moon for this extended period of time is because he is an employee of Lunar Industries. A company whose main profit is derived from helium-3, a substance that scientists in the near future have learned to turn into a massive and clean energy source. Sam is the single human employee on the Moon base who's only companion is GERTY (perfectly voiced by Kevin Spacey) a lovable but sometimes genuinely creepy Robot/Base Operator. As Sam's final weeks are coming to a close he is involved in a rover accident during a Helium 3 pick up that leaves him unconcious until he is awoken in the base infermary. From this point forward the movie moves into psychological thriller mode and begins piling on the mystery as it picks at Sam's sanity. Even to the point where he's under the distinct impression that there is another Sam on the base with him. As the movie continues to build steam it brings the audience to a very emotional climax which was beautiful and difficult for me to watch. I believe that Sam Rockwell's performance in this movie should get him some awards if not plently of acting work from here on out. He truly sucked me into the performance of not one but two Sams, and I viewed them as two completely different entities. It's been a long time since I've been fascinated by the imagination of a movie and this one does just that. If you're a fan of Sci-fi and written concepts about human memory and purpose then this film is for you. If you're looking for an Action packed laser shooting popcorn fest then don't pick this one up. It's a thinker

new Rammstein Album "Liebe ist für alle da" Review

love is there for everyone

I'd have to say that the title for this new Rammstein album sums up the disc's mood quite nicely.  This is not your standard metal album, for those of you that have experienced Rammstein before, most likely through "Mutter" or "Sehnsucht" which contains

  the bar stomping single "Du Hast".  This sort of humorous experimentation is common place.  But even this album tends to veer into unexpected areas.  The first impression I got about this album is that they must have been listening to a lot of Depeche Mode when they made it.  I know Rammstein has to enjoy Depeche Mode somewhat since they covored Depeche Mode's "Stripped" from "Black Celebration" but this album seems to be a parallel or tribute to some of Depeche Modes older albums.  Rammstein's keyboard player Christian "Flake" Lorenz and singer Till Lindemann take center stage on this album and give off that scent of 80's pop music more so then the rest of the band.  Lorenz davels in older synth noises to create a moody yet poppy atmosphere for Lindemann to lay down his syrupy german lyrics.  Taking this into account you may be thinking "I thought Rammstein were a metal band?  What are they doing making a pussy pop album!?"  What's important to remember is that Rammstein is a deeply satirical band, something some American listeners may not realize.  And this album is very funny in some instances, the satire so thick and dry it could preserve food. An example of this dry humor being the lyrics to the song "Pussy".  "You have a pussy, I have a dick, So what's the problem?" (and yes those lyrics are sung in english with a thick German accent, I mean who knew that Dick was pronounced Dic-KA.)

   The guitar work for the most part is getting to be old hat though. There are always some nice little parts here and there but it's usually the same Chugga chugga that we've come to expect from macho metal bands. It supports some of their songs very well but it is becoming a predictable fascit of Rammstein's bag of tricks.  As far as technical skill is concerned I'd have to say that the drummer, (Christopher "Doom" Schneider) has improved the most.  He's begun to throw in blast beats here and there that help refresh some of the stale guitar rhythms that have been recycled.  But at the end of the day despite his surge in technicality he has now only become a good drummer as opposed to a veeery straight forward one.  And I'm sorry to report but there is No real bass to be proud of on this album, which is upsetting considering my love for the instrument. Rammstein has never been a bass oriented band though I suppose, and I shouldn't expect it from them.  

  So all n all I'd say the good things about this album is that it has some solid hooks, and interesting melodies with some funny music to keep it from dragging on and on.  This is all due to the vocals and keyboards.  Oddly enough the things that made Rammstein so great in the past, the insane industrial stomp of their guitars seems to hold them back this time around.  I recommend listening to this album while fishing or sitting back in your apartment tossing back an icey brew.  Otherwise it's not going to do you much good working out or running around town trying to brood about the darker aspects of life.

I feel as if one of the few things that will survive during the 2012 disaster is Cockroaches, Zombies, Lava, and Red Sox fans/players. There's simply no getting rid of them.

FOOD INC. REVIEW

It doesn't take to much of a stretch to know that this movie has something to do with food and corporations. I went into it half expecting Michael Moore or that Fast Food movie guy to preach me into a corner and to an extent the creator of the film (Robert Kenner) did just that. The difference between him and the rest of those documentary makers is that Kenner seems to be calm and pragmatic when it comes to his preaching, so I'm not to upset about being pinned against the wall by his rhetoric (not anything else you sick bastards). He seems to be making the preachy statements about what the camera catches, not random statistics he found on the web or some hyped up speech writers monologue, which is very refreshing when it comes to these types of films.
Food Inc. does start out quite dramatically but luckily it falls into some genuinly shocking footage and some interesting information that keeps you invested and not screaming at the screen. I suppose you couldn't have a politically motivated movie without the teary eyed people who have been harmed by the omnipresent "system", but all of them seem to be coming from a very realistic position and I never felt as if any of them were being hyperbolic. One interesting thing that the film did point out was the spread of food poisoning from E. Coli due to Cows being forced to wade in their own waste day in and day out until they finally do check out permanently in the factories. The next day after seeing the film there was an article posted on Yahoo about the same type of incident, check out the link to the news report below.

E. Coli Report

Without giving to much of the shock that this film hinges on away I would say that it truly is a movie that will make you question what you're eating and where your food comes from. It's not P.E.T.A. on steroids or Scientology trying to tell you that the government is planting alien seed babies in your vegetables. This is simply a film about how the Food Industrial Complex much like the Military Industrial Complex is designed for profit so what ever can be done to cut costs and make money quicker is favored over such things as workers rights, health inspections, and government regulation of potentially hazardous materials (meat, veggies, chemicals in both, etc...). I would say that this is one of the best documentaries I've seen in a while and would hope it wins some awards so Robert Kenner can continue to do his investigative reporting, I would also be interested in a full fledged fiction from this guy because he has a visual style that is hypnotizing.
Now I know some of you want to sling him into the "hippie liberal commie" group that so many individuals seem to enjoy doing these days. But before you do then at least consider that every single company he wanted to conduct an interview with declined (Tyson, Smithfield, etc...), and that the people he talked to were people involved in agriculture who were being taken advantage of by CEO's of these companies (one example being the companies right to patent genetically modified food, thus the seeds that produce them as well making it difficult for farmers to grow independently.) That says to me they at least don't want to be too open about their practices. This isen't Michael Moore they're dealing with, it's Robert Kenner and I surely hope he dethrowns the overweight king of "evil big brother" documentaries, and starts bringing true investigative reporting back. As of now keep your mind open and don't take my word for it, check out a film that will make you think.

Singularity Summit 2009: Ten Unanswered Questions For Our Future Robot Overlords

If you could ask the product of the robot-human merge ten questions, what would they be? While I undoubtedly learned a lot at the Singularity Summit, the conference's greatest benefit was the questions it didn't answer. Unresolved issues regarding the Singularity have provided a lot of philosophical grist for my admittedly limited intellectual mill, and working through those problems has been as exciting as any talk I saw at the Summit.
To wrap up our coverage of the Singularity Summit, I'm going to count down my ten most vexing unanswered questions about Kurzweil's theoretical baby, the eventual merge of human and artificial intellifnece, and I am interested to hear any opinions, questions or (hopefully) answers you all have about any or all of these still unexplained facets of our future.

10. Is there just one kind of consciousness or intelligence?

During his talk, Ray Kurzweil, the pioneer of the concept of Singularity, referred to intelligence as prediction. It evolved so that humans could look at an animal on the savanna, and guess where it would go next. Clearly, computers have already surpassed us in predicting a wide range of events (chess moves, the weather, economic trends, etc.).
Of course, we know that people's ability to predict outcomes in different fields, say, whether my girlfriend will like this or that flower better, varies so widely that they effectively act as different forms of intelligence.
Assuming there are different forms of intelligence, how do we know machines won't take on a new one that we won't recognize as intelligence? And if there are different kinds of intelligences, are there different kinds of consciousness, too? Could a machine arrive at a new kind of consciousness that we don't recognize, leading us to miss the Singularity?

9. How will you use your digital intelligence to kill us all?

A lot of people spent the conference worrying about our eventual extinction at the hands of our automaton creations. But for all that paranoia, no one really explained how a computer program could manage to kill me.
Will it hack into the nuclear missile command and launch all the nukes? Will it crash all the planes? And couldn't we just pull the plug? Someone still needs to explain to me what I have to fear from a being with no physical presence.

8. Are you "Tommy"? Deaf, dumb and blind?

When the first artificial brain comes online, how can its first thought be anything other than "holy crap, I'm blind!" A disembodied intelligence in a machine will exist with a serious lack of senses. Maybe it can see and hear, but feel? Doubtful. How does a consciousness that can't feel keep from freaking out? I'd be pissed, and I imagine the first AI will be too. Which leads too...

7. Do you have emotions?

Can AI become depressed? The first one will no doubt be rather lonely. How will being the first (and only) member of a species affect the AI's development and relationships? The first digital consciousness may come into the world like the only Goth kid in a small town high school: isolated and without anyone who can sympathize. Not really the kind of being I want with access to all our weapons and economic tools.

6. Are humans more similar to your AI construct than we thought?

Jurgen Schmidhuber, a philosopher at the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence, noted in his talk that the human brain compresses information like a .zip file, and that we differentiate boredom and interest by measuring how much the new information we take in allows us to compress the information even further.
I really thought he was on to something with his description of how the brain handles the new data from the expansion of our personal experiences. Which leads me to wonder, just how computer-like is our brain already? Ours brains already run software, of sorts, that result in biologically similar brains producing vastly different personalities. Is it possible the Singularity will occur not because we create machines that resemble the human brain, but because we uncover just how computer-like the human brain is naturally?

5. How much does programming influence your free will?

In the discussions about avoiding a robo-apocalypse, speaker after speaker stressed the need to teach digital consciousnesses to have human values. And many people wondered why we couldn't just program the robots not to kill us? Well, presumably we would, but once the computer programs achieve self-awareness and free will, couldn't they choose not to follow that programing? Whether its dieting or monogamy, Humans avoid following their programing all the time. What makes us think a sentient program wouldn't similarly disregard its basic urges?

4. Do you ave a subconscious?

If AI minds are as complex as human brains, does that mean they will have areas that they cannot understand, control, or access? Are the Id, Ego, and other elements of our unconscious the consequence of biology or a necessary component of sentience? Can AI have irrational beliefs or psychological problems? If the AI thinks we're their god, or at the very least their creator, could it have an oedipal problem? If so, that might explain why it tries to kill us.

3. Will you actually help us transcend the less pleasant aspects of being human?

As anyone who reads internet comment boards know, for every one person that uses the web to broaden their horizons and question their prejudices, there a dozen idiots who use the same technology to spread misinformation about global warming being a hoax, compare Obama to Stalin and Hitler, and ask other idiots for money to help a Nigerian prince. In addition to granting immortality and making everyone nigh-omniscient, won't the Singularity also provide the ultimate avenue for people to disseminate the lust, greed and hatred humans have pursued for tens of thousands of years? 2. Do you care about anything at all?

What's to say that an intelligence vastly greater than our own won't uncover the pointlessness of life, become a nihilist, and turn itself off? Or, what if it's so intelligent, it simply doesn't care about humans? Everyone at the conference predicted a very needy AI, but no one could answer why the AI wouldn't be just as likely to withdraw from humanity as engage it.

1. And finally, what if someone threw a Singularity and no one came?

After her talk, Anna Salamon told me that the Singularity would effect everyone in the world within a span of minutes to a couple of years. As she was telling me that, I thought of these pictures.
Last year, a pilot discovered a previously uncontacted tribe living deep in the Amazon. In parts of South America, Asia and Africa, there are people whose way of life hasn't changed much in the last 300 years, let alone the last 30. Why would the Singularity be different? Sure, I can imagine people with brain chips plugging into a higher intelligence on the Upper West Side, but how long until that technology makes it to the South Bronx? Or Somalia? Or Afghanistan?
If the Singularity only affects one small group of humans, while the rest either can't afford it or simply don't care to participate, what happens to the transhumanist future the Singularity promises? Doesn't the Singularity just set humanity up for another of the rich/poor, North/South problems it already deals with? Once again, its the other people, not the robots, that I worry about.
